LIVINGSTONE CC - Gerkies-43.jpg

Students in Years 5–12 need a laptop for learning.

Our Laptop Program provides suitable devices to student, starting with Years 5 & 9 in 2025 and expanding each year.

By the start of 2027, all students in year 5-12 will be utilising a College provided device.

Benefits of the program:

  • Saves families money

  • Covers warranty and maintenance

  • Ensures laptops meet school software needs

  • Provides a secure online experience

Students not in the program must bring their own device (BYOD) to access school resources.

In 2025, this is Year 7-8 and 11-12. In 2026, this is year 8 & 12.

1.1 Student Agreement The College has developed an agreement that outlines the terms and conditions for a student to loan a laptop from the College as part of the One-To-One Laptop Program. This agreement must be signed by both the student and their parent/guardian before a laptop will be issued to them. Click here to view the Student One-To-One Laptop Agreement

1.1 FAQ's 1. Can students bring their own laptops from home? The College is transitioning from a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to a 1:1 school provided laptop program. Once a year level has begun the school provided laptop program, they are no longer allowed to bring in their own laptop. 2. Does the College load the software? Each device will be loaded with a Livingstone Christian College approved software image configured for use on the College network. The image will contain operating system software, anti‐virus software and standard Microsoft software. Software installed by the school is copyrighted and must not be distributed or deleted without written permission from the College. 3. How do students get technical support during the day? IT support is available for students by visiting the IT Helpdesk window located in the library before school, during break times or after school. Students may only visit the IT Helpdesk during lesson time at the discretion of the classroom teacher. 4. Can student laptops be personalised? Students must not “personalise” the laptop in any way including but not limited to the use of felt pens, stickers or other marks. The laptop will be identified as assigned to a particular student in a manner determined by the College. Students are not to remove any identification labels from the equipment. 5. Will computers be checked for inappropriate material? The laptop will not be specifically scanned for inappropriate software. However, if a student is detected with inappropriate material or virus-related software then the unit will be reimaged, and the student will receive consequences from the relevant Head of School. 6. Should students be backing up their laptop? Students are always expected to back up their work as a normal housekeeping operation. Portable Hard drives, USB Sticks and OneDrive are the various methods that students can use to back up their work. The College recommends using OneDrive as this can be accessed on any computer with an internet connection. 7. Do the laptops get system and software updates? Yes. Microsoft Updates are automatically downloaded to each computer. Updates to software installed through the College will be automatic and scheduled to not conflict with student use. 8. Will an internet filter be installed on the laptop? The College’s internet connection is filtered at a server level so that students operate in a safe environment. There will not be specific filters installed on the laptop so access at home will be under the parent’s supervision. 9. Where will laptops be stored during the day? During the College day when the devices are not being used (lunchtime, PE practicals), the devices should be securely stored in a student’s locker or a secure classroom. The device must be properly powered off prior to storage to preserve battery life and to prevent heat build‐up. 10. What happens if a student comes to the College and the laptop is not charged? It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the laptop is charged each night. Students will not be permitted to recharge laptops in the classrooms as per Work Health & Safety regulations. In some limited circumstances, or in the event of charger failure, students may negotiate to have their laptops charged at IT Helpdesk.

BYOD FAQ's What about safe internet use? Appropriate use of the internet service within the College network is closely monitored by a filtering system which allows for inappropriate content blocking by a regularly updated list of categories and sites. The College already has policies in place such as the ICT acceptable use policy to ensure appropriate use of technology and the internet. IT Acceptable Use Policy The College monitors usage at school, but who monitors it at home? When off school grounds, parents have full responsibility of monitoring device usage. This includes internet usage. Examples of proactive parental device monitoring include: encouraging use in a family room and not in the bedroom restrict device use at certain times of the evening or weekend examine content on the device the use of cyber smart web filtering tools How can students access the internet from home? If there is an existing internet provision at home, it is the parents’ choice as to whether the device is connected. How will data stored on the hard drive be backed up? Students take responsibility for backing up their own data. Data can be saved to the student’s Office 365 OneDrive. The College recommends that data should be backed up using 'cloud' storage options such as Microsoft Office 365. Be aware that many students have lost assignments on their USB portable drives because the USB has either been lost them or accidentally damaged. Where do the devices go when not in use? When not in use, students are responsible for the safe storage of their device. At a minimum the device should be stored in a sturdy protective case. All secondary students are issued with a locker to store their device, school bag and other required equipment. What about flat batteries? Will students ‘plug in’ in the classrooms? Students are expected to bring their device fully charged to school each day. The laptop are expected to be fitted with a battery that can last the day. There may be the ability for students to recharge their device in the classroom but this must not be assumed. Students will not be able to leave their device unattended while charging. Maintenance & Technical problems? All maintenance of the device is the responsibility of the owner. The College is not responsible for the maintenance or upkeep of a student's device. The College IT Support team can provide assistance with troubleshooting basic problems and connecting student devices to the college Wi-Fi. Please be aware that the College will not be responsible for fixing problems caused by viruses, spyware/malware, data loss and other issues on a students personal device. What if the device doesn’t meet the minimum requirements? Devices that do not meet the minimum requirements will be considered non-compliant. What will I use if my device is broken? The college will have a limited number of laptops that can be loaned out to a student on a short-term basis while their device is being repaired or replaced. A job or case number will need to be provided as evidence that a device is being repaired or replaced before a laptop can be loaned out. Students may loan a laptop for a maximum of 2 weeks.
