Drama

Offered as an elective from Year 7 to Year 12, the discipline of Drama is a creative avenue of learning which hones verbal and non-verbal communication skills, confidence, creative thinking and literacy through engaging, interactive, collaborative and student-focussed teaching and learning. Exploring human relationships and the human condition, students enjoy forming, presenting and responding to drama whilst developing their personal skills of drama and an appreciation of live theatre and the broader arts.

Curriculum Drama students are given opportunity throughout the academic year to showcase their learning and skills for live audiences. Students enjoy several opportunities to experience professional live theatre through incursions and excursions, with productions by Shake & Stir Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre Company, La Boite and touring work presented at QPAC and the Gold Coast Arts Centre.

Music

Offered as a specialist subject from Prep to Year 6 and an elective from Year 7 to Year 12, Music is an important part of life and vital for cognitive and total brain development; the study of music hones universal expressive and communication skills, traditional and digital literacy and numeracy, through current and innovative student-focussed teaching and learning. Exploring humanity and culture, students engage in musicology, composing and performing music. 

Since 2015 our talented composers have successfully entered work into the Australian Society of Music Education (ASME) Young Composers Competition, and performed at the Conservatorium of Music. Our 2017 state winners include Casey Klein (Year 10) and Lauren Taylor (Year 7). Our 2018 state winner was Casey Klein (Year 11) for her original composition ‘We Must Be Right’.

Music in Primary

Embracing the Australian Curriculum, Foundation students enjoy specialist classes studying Music, including elements of beat, rhythm, pitch and tempo, folk music and percussion instruments. Intermediate students enjoy specialist classes studying Music, including written music, pitched instruments (recorder, glockenspiel, xylophone), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Music and music theory.

In collaboration with Livingstone Arts Academy, targeted and keenly interested students in Year 3 are invited to be musically extended, being introduced to a string instrument (violin, viola, cello) through participation in small group instrumental tuition and our Intermediate String Orchestra. In Year 4 the same opportunity is provided for students to learn a concert band instrument (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, euphonium and percussion through participation in small group instrumental tuition and perform in our Year 4 Concert Band.

Music in Secondary

Middle Phase Music students study topics such as Keyboard Evolution, Video Game Composition, DJ-ing, Musicals, Studio Recording and music for Film and Television. Within this, Livingstone Christian College is identified as a MusicEDU lead school, and opportunities are provided for talented students to enter in national and international MusicEDU competitions.

Senior Phase Music students study topics such as Motown, Music Cryptography, Worship Music, Musical Design, Musical Identity, Musical Innovation and Musical Narratives, whilst honing their skills of performance, composition and musicology.

Secondary music students enjoy incursions and excursions to various productions and the opportunity to perform curriculum work for a live audience of family and friends.

In addition to general music, talented music students are given the opportunity to study Music Extension as an additional subject in Year 12. Students have the option to specialise in Performance, Composition or Musicology.

Dance

Offered as an elective from Year 7 to Year 9, the discipline of Dance is a unique art form in which the body is an instrument for non-verbal communication and expressive movement. Exploring humanity and culture through physical and emotional expression, improving fitness and well-being, students enjoy making and responding to dance whilst developing their personal skills of dance and arts appreciation.

Curriculum Dance students are given a variety of opportunities throughout the academic year to showcase their learning and skills for live audiences, as well as attend professional productions relevant to their learning.
