Rwandan GC2018 Athletes Visit Livingstone

On Wednesday 28th March, Livingstone Christian College will be visited by representatives from their adopted Commonwealth Games country, Rwanda. The College will welcome Rwandan athletes, beach volleyballers, a para-powerlifting athlete, coaches, and support staff, as well as their National Olympic and Sports Committee Advisor and Team Manager.

The day begins at 8:30am with a welcome ceremony for the Rwanda athletes and dignitaries. College staff and students will be addressed by Dr Mark Laraghy, College Principal and Mr Michael Roux, The Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Rwanda to Australia. The 2018 Rwandan Commonwealth Games Team will be introduced by Mrs Felicity Rwemerika, Vice President of the Commonwealth Association and Member and Commission of the International Olympic Committee.

The Rwandan athletes will have the opportunity to connect with College secondary students in a number of small sessions during the day. A celebrity volleyball match will be held at 12:40pm between the Rwandan athletes and College students who may also have a few other celebrities on their team. At 2pm, the Rwandan athletes will join in a Colour Run with the primary students.

Livingstone Christian College is committed to growing students who are prepared for a globalised future. The College would like to thank the Rwanda GC2018 for helping us build Gold Coast students into global citizens.

From the day

What an incredible day it was for everyone at Livingstone. A huge thank you to the Rwandan team who took the time to come to our College, providing students, parents, staff, and the wider community an incredible beginning to our friendship with Rwanda! We think Commonwealth Games Federation President Louise Martin CBE summed the day up well when she said, "You are now home at Livingstone."

Earlier, the Rwandan athletes spent time with our Secondary students in their classrooms, providing them with the opportunity to learn and gain an insight into the lives of athletes. Our College places a high importance on preparing our students for a globalised future. Some of our College staff and students, along with Paul Burt from Channel 7 Queensland and Katrina Reid from Study Gold Coast, also had opportunity to play the Rwandan team in a friendly Volleyball competition. It was a narrow victory for Rwanda! Keep your eye on this team… you may just see them taking out the competition at #GC2018!

Lots of fun was had by our students during their Cross Country today, running with the Rwandan #GC2018 Athletes. Our Livingstone Primary students can now say that they’ve run with the best! You couldn’t wipe the grin off everyone’s faces, as they posed for photos in their new work-of-art, colour-stained T-shirts.

Thank you again to the Rwandan Diaspora for helping us create this amazing day for the Commonwealth Games team and our students. Let’s support and cheer on both our Australian and Rwandan athletes during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games! Good luck to everyone!
